| A History of the Legacy |
| Legacy Presbyterian Church belongs to a great legacy of local churches that began in downtown Dallas in 1856 with the founding of the First Presbyterian Church (www.presbyterians.org). In 1926, the First Presbyterian Church, one of the largest and best known churches in the United States with a coast to coast Bible radio program under the leadership of Dr. William Anderson helped start a new church that became known as the Highland Park Presbyterian Church (www.hppc.org). This new church quickly grew to have the largest southern Presbyterian Sunday School in the nation and a membership topping 4,000 members under the renowned ministry of Dr. William Anderson. In 1949, a young couples' Sunday School class at Highland Park Presbyterian Church helped launch a church three miles north in the booming Preston Hollow community of Dallas. The Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church (www.phpc.org), at the corner of Walnut Hill and Preston Road in Dallas, quickly grew to over of over 1600 in its first ten years of existence. In 1979, Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church helped launch Grace Presbyterian Church at 4300 West Park Boulevard in Plano (www.gracepc.org). This new church quickly outgrew their initial portable trailers and had two major building programs in its first five years as membership topped 700 members. When the church celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2004, it had over a 1000 members, three ordained pastors, and a full compliment of programs. That year the elders and Grace heard God's call to launch a new church in the northwest Frisco/Little Elm section of the Dallas Metroplex. In April of that year, Dr. Larry Thorson, Associate Pastor of Missions and Evangelism at Grace, offered a ten week Alpha Course (www.alphausa.org) in the home of Grace members, Suzanne and Kevin Mattison, in the neighboring community of The Colony. Soon, homes began to open up in the northwest Frisco community and the new church began to emerge. In 2004, Grace Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church (USA) purchased 11 acres at the corner of Eldorado Parkway and Legacy Drive, just west of the Dallas Tollway for the new church. What a great location to continue the great legacy of Jesus Christ in west Frisco. Beginning in 2006, small groups and bible studies formed with the goal of calling an Organizing Pastor in 2007. Our Organizing Pastor, Glen Hunihan, joined the Legacy community in November, 2007. Throughout the spring and summer of 2008, we met for informal worship and discussion on Sunday mornings and hosted numerous community outreach events. On April 13, 2008, Legacy began monthly Sunday evening Pre-Launch worship services at Corbell Elementary School. Effective September 7, 2008, we will be launching Sunday morning public worship at Corbell Elementary School located in The Trails sub-division in NW Frisco. We welcome children and provide exciting children's activities each Sunday. We invite all those interested in being a part of God's new ministry in Frisco to join us! |
